Thanks, very true!! I think it’s worse though than “black audiences don’t help”, in fact they hurt. If Hollywood sees that black folks would rather see Booty Call than Eve’s Bayou, then they’re gonna give ‘em what they want.I agree with that.
Just going by recent history (the past 10-15 years)
Sure, movies like Booty Call, Soul Plane, Black Dynamite and the Madea movies, etc, are considered the go-to movies in the Black Community.
But there have been a few Black films and/or movies featuring Black characters in the lead that weren’t the usual Black Hollywood fare
But those are few and far between.
We know that if we want films featuring black characters that don’t fit into the “same ol’ same”, then it’s a pretty good chance we will have to settle for either ensemble pieces
or, the dreaded “Black People Being Saved By Liberal, Color Blind White Folx”
G-rated, simplified bigotry, watered down historical Disney style feelgood “what racism…not in my house, mister” movies
…and then there’s Black Hollywood, when they are given the rare chance to tell a black history story
They pull punches and take “dramatic licence” with the truth for the sake of “entertainment”.
Which brings me to how I feel that Black Hollywood and the United States Congress are similar; they both claim to provide the public a service yet their actions betray their alleged intent. They both give justification for their actions when the truth is terribly apparent:
They are all about getting paid, morals be damned.
(NOTE: Notice how the majority of the movies I used as examples had the same actors in them? That’s another problem with Black Hollywood, no variety. Once a black actor/actress become a favorite of mainstream Hollywood, the rest of you Negroes can go home.)

This reminds me of going to see Eve’s Bayou, directed by Kasi Lemmons. I saw it in the same cineplex where Booty Call was showing. I was the only black person in the audience for Eve’s Bayou. Hollywood is a business motivated strictly by money. It surely is. Movies that don’t portray us doing dumb, ghetto or involving Tyler Perry or Love Boat-ish family comedies don’t get any real push because of the still perceived fear that they won’t make money.
These three movies opening week, showed on less than 50 screens.
This movie
already considered to be one of the worst movies EVER
Opened on 1,500 SCREENS! Cost 10 millon American dollars to make and made less than 4 million at the box office.
So Hollywood is telling a lie when they say don’t want to lose money because they do on the regular.
Yet they won’t give full coverage to black movies unless there is some kind of “coon” factor in play or they fit certain criteria.
And the black audiences don’t help when they pick Booty Call over Eve’s Bayou.
